Woodville is known for his detailed and heroic illustrations of historic battle scenes of the 19th and 20th centuries, with this particular work showing the charge of the British 9th Lancers during the Battle of Mons at the start of WWI (1914 - 1918).  A highly detailed monochromatic b&w reproduction of the original colour plate, which loses none of its immediacy amidst the tumult of battle, where men and horses faced increasing mechanisation, and life grew ever cheaper.
